Having A Field Day!

07/01/2011

"The city of Los Angeles – rich with museums, aquariums, cultural landmarks and historic sites – offers oodles of field trip destinations, many of which offer free admission for school age children. Through exciting classroom outings and tours, students experience their city and surroundings through hands-on learning, and they’re eyes are opened to new discoveries that may impact them now and in the future.
There is a challenge, however. Schools, including Grand View Elementary, must provide funds to cover transportation costs for field trips. Thanks to Sarah Auerswald and the school’s PTA/PTO, field trips are a priority for fifth-graders. And, thanks to the Box Tops for Education earnings the school secures, those field trips are a reality.
“The field trips have been so valuable to the kids. Once the district stopped funding them due to high gas prices, the PTA felt it was our job to maintain that emphasis on out-of-classroom learning,” explained Auerswald. “You never know what doors will open in a child’s mind. If they’re given a better understanding of the ocean and aquatic life, they may choose to become a marine biologist. A child who experiences the beauty and understanding of art in a museum may become an artist or photographer.”
Auerswald sends home timely fliers to keep Box Tops top of mind with Grandview families. “Every classroom has a collection box and we continue to see success in our efforts. It’s very inspiring to keep working on the Box Tops effort, to do better and make it the best effort for our kids."
