Great Big Thermometer!

I think it would help to motivate students to bring in boxtops if we had a great big thermometer with a movable read cord. I can see the darn thing in my head but am not terribly artistic myself.  Is there a place that I could order such a thing, or maybe even a template that I could get to someplace?

RE: Great Big Thermometer!

why dont you draw one on poster board and color in the amounts raised every month?

It does really help motivate the kids when they have a visual to go by

RE: Great Big Thermometer!

I made one using my computer.  The poster has both spanish and english on it.  It prints onto an 8X14 legal sized sheet of paper, so it isn't huge but it is very visible.  I had it laminated and now can use a dry erase marker to color in the thermometer and mark the goal amount.  I even made little laminated cutouts so when we hit our goal I just write the total and can tape the little cutout (it's decorated with celebratory balloon clipart) onto the poster.  This way it can be reused every year.  If you wanted it to be a little sturdier, you could attach it to posterboard.

Someone on a different boxtops subject about collection sheets posted this site www.ptotoday.com/filesharing/category/92-clipart . I was just playing around with it and saw they have the thermometer but its for $2500. Not sure if you can change it to your needs.

RE: Great Big Thermometer!

When I took over the bt at our school I made a thermometer for each teacher and colored it in each month.  The students enjoyed seeing each classes progress and brought out a little competitiveness.  I have a bulletin board that the school lets me use that is about 10 foot long and 4 foot tall.  I covered it in blue paper and cut out BOXTOPS FOR EDUCATION in yellow paper, then placed each teachers thermometer (8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper) randomly around the words.  The thermometer was marked in increments of 50 and maxed out at 800.  In the 5 months that I have been over bts there have already been a few teachers that have maxed out.  Hope this helps some!!
