Snowman Cake

Winter party? Make a bunch of frosted cakes, and invite kids or kids-at-heart to decorate.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Gold Medal® all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • ¼ cup butter or margarine, softened
  • ¼ cup water
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • About 1 cup Betty Crocker® Rich & Creamy vanilla frosting (from 1-lb container)
  • About 4 pretzel rods
  • About 9 large gumdrops in assorted colors
  • 1 candy cane (about 4 inches long)

Directions

  1. Heat oven to 350°F. Grease bottom and side of 8- or 9-inch round cake pan with shortening; lightly flour. In large bowl, beat flour, sugar, sour cream, butter, water, baking soda, baking powder and egg with electric mixer on low speed 30 seconds, scraping bowl constantly. Beat on high speed 2 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Pour into pan; spread evenly.
  2. Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until cake springs back when touched lightly in center. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pan to cooling rack. Cool completely, about 1 hour.
  3. Spread frosting over side and top of cake. For hat, press graduated lengths of broken pretzel rods across top third of cake, with 2 pretzel rods extending 1/2 inch beyond side of cake to form brim of hat. For eyes, press 2 black gumdrops on cake. Press 2 orange gumdrops to flatten; shape to make pointed nose and press on cake. Press 5 gumdrops to flatten; cut into rounds. Press and overlap flattened gumdrops on cake for mouth. Poke straight end of candy cane in cake slightly above mouth for pipe.
